Some prisoners wanted to revolt in Chattogram Central Jail. A group of miscreants also tried to break the main gate from outside the jail. At one point, the prison guards shot at them. Later the army men also came. At present the situation is calm.

The incident took place on Friday (August 9) during Friday prayers. Later, the security guards and army personnel came and brought the situation under control.

Locals said, shortly after the end of Friday prayers, the sound of gunshots was suddenly heard. Then it started increasing. Screams were also heard. The situation in the whole area came to a standstill.

According to a source, some people gathered from outside the jail and tried to break the main gate of the jail. Soon after, the inmates inside rioted and clashed with the prison guards.

In this regard, Chattogram Central Jail Senior Jail Superintendent Manjur Hossain said that the inmates tried to create some chaos inside. At present the situation is somewhat calmer than before. We have opened the lockup of the wards. As far as we understand, the prisoners want to understand that those arrested in quota movements in other jails are getting bail. Why are they not getting it? So they think, why will they stay! But that is a matter of legal process. We cannot leave them like this. That is the main point.

Regarding the casualties, he said, there are some casualties, not so big. Some of our staff was injured. We are patiently monitoring the situation. No one from outside could enter inside and our prisoners could not escape. The army quickly arrived. We hope that if the army stays here for a few days, any situation will not arise.

The Jail Superintendent also said that there are war criminals and various types of convicts in this prison. We are talking about whomever gets bail will leave.

Incidentally, among the prisoners there are as many as 25 militants, as many as 150 Kuki-chin members including women and over a hundred death row convicts.
