Today is November 10, Shaheed Noor Hossain Day. On this day in 1987, the streets of Dhaka were stained with Noor Hossain's blood. Noor Hossain's sacrifice led the movement of people seeking democracy towards its inevitable end. As a result, the then dictator fell in the late nineties.
On that day, Noor Hossain also took to the streets as a poster of life along with thousands of protesting youth. The burning slogan 'Free democracy, down with autocracy' was carved on his chest and back.
In the tide of this movement, the throne of autocracy was swept away in the late 1990s. The autocracy of the Ershad government fell. The long-cherished dream of democracy was established in the country. Since then, Shaheed Noor Hossain has become a symbol of the democratic movement. Since then, every year it is being celebrated as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day with due dignity.
Like every year, various political parties, social and cultural organizations have taken up detailed programs to mark the day. These programs include laying wreaths at the martyr's tomb, paying homage at the Shaheed Noor Hossain square, discussion meetings and seminars.
Furthermore, wreaths will be laid at the graves of Shaheed Noor Hossain and Nurul Huda Babul at the Jurain graveyard, Fateha will be recited and prayers will be offered.
