The construction work of the cargo terminal at Ashuganj River Port in Brahmanbaria will be completed by December next year. Hopefully, even if it is not fully operational, 80 percent of the work will be completed. If it is operational, the capacity of the port will increase further, said Brigadier General(retd) M. Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Shipping.
He told reporters this after inspecting the progress of the construction work of the cargo terminal at Ashuganj River Port in Brahmanbaria and the container river port project area on Monday (November 11) afternoon. BIWTA is constructing a new cargo terminal at the river port with Tk. 210 crore financing from the World Bank. The new terminal has 3 jetties and various infrastructures including storage sheds. The project is scheduled to be completed by December next year.
The Shipping Adviser said that Ashuganj River Port has been selected as the hub for the construction of the cargo terminal. Once it is built, it will handle 10 lakh metric tons of goods. Another thing is that when the World Bank finances, they do not do it without seeing. If they think it is profitable, they finance it only then.
At that time, BIWTA Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa, BIWTA Project Director Ayub Ali, Brahmanbaria Police Superintendent Jabedur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Jasmine Sultana, Ashuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shyamal Chandra Basak, and Charchartala Union Chairman Faizur Rahman were present with the adviser.
At that time, BIWTA Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa said that 23 percent of the work has already been completed. The remaining work may take time until December 2026 to complete.
Regarding the navigability of the river, he said that there was a jetty here before. In that light, a new jetty is being built. The bottom of the jetty will not be completely closed. It will remain open. Due to which the water flow will be fine. There is no reason to worry. However, he also said that if there is a problem for any reason, action will be taken accordingly.
