Garment workers have lifted the blockade on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. After that, traffic on the highway became normal.
After this, the blockade was lifted on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after about 60 hours at 10:30 pm on Monday (November 11), and traffic resumed.
Meanwhile, Labor Ministry Secretary KHM Shafiquzzaman spoke to the workers through the UNO mobile phone. Their conversation was broadcast on the microphone. The Labor Secretary assured the workers that the government has taken the responsibility of paying the workers' dues. In the initial stage, arrangements will be made to pay Tk. 6 crore by the government's initiative by next Sunday. A decision will be made after a meeting with the Labor Ministry adviser in the presence of the chairman of the organization and worker representatives regarding the payment of the remaining dues. The company's property will be mortgaged if necessary to pay the workers' dues.
Earlier, at around 2 pm, the workers announced the withdrawal of the movement and left the road after being assured by the factory authorities, including the labor secretary, and the law enforcement agencies. Shortly after this, the aggrieved workers blocked the road again at around 3:30 pm. This again turned the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway into a riot. Severe traffic jams were created.
It is worth noting that the blockade continued for three consecutive days since last Saturday morning.
