New CEC in immediate response, acceptable elections are my mission

The interim government has appointed former secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). In an immediate response after taking charge, he said, "I will do whatever is necessary for free, fair and acceptable elections, InshaAllah. When this responsibility comes, we have to fulfill it properly with everyone's cooperation."

He told a media outlet on Thursday (November 21) afternoon, "It is a very important responsibility to be an Election Commissioner. In such a situation, the expectations will be very high. Especially regarding the elections. I will fulfill my duty with the utmost sacrifice that is my promise."

Regarding the 13th parliamentary elections, he said, "I believe in free, fair and credible elections. This is my mission. This is my vision. This is my responsibility and this is my commitment to the nation."

Regarding the challenges ahead, AMM Nasir Uddin said, "There will be challenges. I have previously served as a secretary in the ministries of health, energy and information. There were challenges there too. There will be more in the future." This will have to be faced and fulfilled.

Retired Additional Secretary Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar, retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, retired Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmed and former Brigadier General Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah have been appointed as Election Commissioners.

The Election Commission (EC) led by Kazi Habibul Awal resigned on September 5 due to the changing situation in the country. This commission resigned within two and a half years of taking charge. Former Senior Secretary Kazi Habibul Awal took oath as CEC on February 27, 2022.

The Awami League government fell on August 5. The next day, President Md. Shahabuddin declared the 12th Jatiyo Sangsad dissolved. Then on August 8, the advisers of the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus took oath. After the interim government took charge, major changes took place at the top levels of the judiciary, public administration and police forces. Many top officials of various government and autonomous institutions, starting with the Chief Justice, have already resigned.
