The state is going to the Appellate Division against the High Court's order to ban battery-powered auto-rickshaws in Dhaka Metropolitan Area.

On Sunday (November 24), Deputy Attorney General Noor Muhammad Azmi confirmed the matter and said that preparations for the application are underway.

Last Tuesday (November 19), the High Court ordered the ban on battery-powered auto-rickshaws in Dhaka Metropolitan area within three days. At the same time, a rule was issued to find out why the inaction of the authorities in banning battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka Metropolitan area would not be illegal.

The High Court issued this order in the wake of this writ petition filed by pedal-powered rickshaw owners. Since then, battery-powered rickshaw drivers have been protesting.

According to the Dhaka Auto-Rickshaw Workers Union, at least 8 lakh battery-powered rickshaws are currently plying on the roads. These illegal vehicles are roaming around even though they are not allowed to ply on the main roads. Law enforcement agencies have taken action against lakhs of battery-powered rickshaws in the last two months.
