PM inaugurates Health Service Week

Dhaka,(Barta24.com): Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said here today that the present government has taken the nursing profession into prime consideration and accordingly decided that henceforth all intending nursing students with any background can read nursing not only alone with science background which is now in practice.

She said, there was a problem that if anybody wanted to take nursing courses she must be a student of science. So to make it open for all with any background can now take up the course. I have ordered to abolish the system to increase the number of nurses in the country, she added. Steps is underway regarding the matter, she further said.  

She told all these on Tuesday (April 16) at Bangabandhu International Conference Center(BICC) as the chief guest while inaugurating the National Health Service  Week and National Nutrition Week. To ensure sound health in the light of the saying coined by the PM ‘Health Service- Commitment of Sheikh Hasina’ the health service week is being observed across the country.   

She further said that in our service field nursing profession was at the bottom level but I raised their standard at a respectable level. We had only diploma nurse, but I took it to Masters level and even there is scope to do Ph.D, she reminded the audience.

The Prime Minister stressed on specialized training for building specialized nurses so that our health service improves.

Sheikh Hasina further told that we the Awami League government set up the country’s first Medical University. We gave special attention to ensure health services to all thus we felt the necessity of skilled manpower. We first set up BSMMU at Dhaka, then we gave attention to upgrade the medical colleges to medical university at Chattogram, Sylhet and Rajshahi and next more eight universities will be set up in all the existing divisions. It will be not allowed set up elsewhere, she said. Those must be of quality, she added.

The function was chaired by Health & Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malek Swopon while it was addressed by the Secretary of the ministry Md. Asadul Islam. State Minister for Health Dr. Murad Hassan spoke as the special guest. Earlier a documentary film on the development of Health Ministry was presented in the function. The Prime Minister also distributed jeeps and ambulances for various upazillas of the country.
