Cyclone Fani caused Taka 537 crore loss to the country

Dhaka: State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. Enamur Rahman informed that the short lived cyclonic storm Fani caused huge loss worth Taka 536 crore 61 lakh.

The State Minister after a coordination meeting of disaster management at the secretariat informed the journalists on Thursday(May 9).

He said that due to Fani one was killed in Bhola, in Noakhali one, in Lakhsmipur one and in Barguna two bringing the total to five people were killed. 63 people were also injured. 2363 homesteads were completely razed to the ground while 18670 were partially damaged. Standing crops of 63 thousand 63 hectares of land were affected. Embankments measuring 21.95 kilometers were affected while 36 villages were inundated.

In the meeting recommendation was done to waive the agriculture loan of the affected people and instead they will be given subsidy.

The State Minister said that so far from April 30 to May 6 in different districts 14 thousand 50 mts. of rice were distributed along with a cash of Taka 0ne crore twenty lakh. In the affected areas 41 thousand packets of dry food were distributed, 4 thousand bundles of C.I.sheet and Taka one crore 20 lakh was given house building as gratuitous relief. On last May 3 to May 4, 16 lakh, 40 thousand 417 people were shifted to shelter centers.

He informed that that due to Fani homesteads worth Taka 78 crore 14 lakh 20 thousand were damaged. Embankment costing Taka 251 crore was damaged. Fish worth Taka 2.84 crore were damaged. Taka 5 crore was loss to to the forests and environment. The damaged road about 21 kilometers will be required Taka 251 crore for repair. In agriculture sector the loss was worth Taka 38 crore.

The rehabilitation work in the affected areas would start soon at the instruction of the Prime Minister, the State Minister said.

 Agriculture Minister Dr. Abdur Razzaq and Deputy Minister of Water Resources  AKM Enamul Haque Shamim were present.
