River Halda polluters to be sued

Chattogram, (Barta24.com): Water Resource Ministry secretary Kabir bin Anowar has instructed to file cases against the Asian Paper mills  for polluting water of Halda. It may be mentioned here that Halda is the only natural fish breeding center of South Asia.

On Thursday (May30) while exchanging views with the  local fish fry collector at Sattar ghat area of Rawjan pourashava he gave this instructions.

It is learnt that BWDB arranged a meeting with the Water Resource ministry and the people residing in the banks of Halda. In the meeting the fish fry collectors made complaints about the pollution of water of Halda river and also raised the matter of Asian paper mills. The wastes of the paper mills drained out in the river through several passages.

Hearing the complaints the secretary instructed the Additional secretary of the ministry Rokonuddowla to file a suit against Asian paper mills. He also instructed to inform the matter to Environment ministry.

Regarding the matter Halda researcher and CU professor Dr. Monjurul Kibria  told Barta24.com that in the coordination meeting of the fish egg collectors and administration it was decided to file cases against Asian paper mills on charge of polluting Halda water. The mill has no wastes treatment plant resulting the draining out of the wastes into the river. The Environment directorate of Chattogram was also informed about the matter.

The Asian paper mill is situated at Nandirhat of Chikokndandi union of Chattogram. The wastes of the mill directly fall in Halda through Madari and Katakhali canals. As a result earlier the mother fishes died several times. The egg production also reduced.

It is learnt that on the night of May 25 the mother fishes released eggs about seven thousand kilograms. About 120 kilograms of fry was produced from that eggs worth Taka one crore.
