Bangladesh was elected member of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of United Nations Organization (UNO). In a secret ballot held at UN headquarter, New York on Friday (June14) Bangladesh was elected member for the next three years(2020-2022).

In the election Bangladesh bagged 181 votes out of 191 votes. In the election three more countries :- Thailand, Republic of Korea and China were also elected. Thailand got 187 votes, Korea 183 while China got 177 votes in the election.

In the United Nations ECOSOC is considered as an important forum next to Security Council. Iraq also announced its candidature but later on it withdrew from the race.

After the election, in a briefing Bangladesh ambassador Masud bin Momen told the journalists that this victory is the reflection of Bangladesh’s advancement in economic and social fields. In global arena Bangladesh moved another step ahead. This will help Bangladesh in implementing the SDG within 2030.

In a reply to a question the ambassador said that the next target of Bangladesh is to be member of the Security Council. But this is not so easy because a number of states are in the pipe line for this post. For this we are to perform more formalities. However we are hopeful. To be the president of ECOSOC is also our target.
