WASA water contains fecal wastes and harmful bacteria

Water supplied by Water & Sewerage Authority (WASA), Dhaka contains bacteria, ammonia and fecal wastes.  

A committee formed by the High Court has found the presence of these harmful elements in the samples collected from 8 places in the four zones and Sayedabad, Chandnighat of 10 modes of WASA zones.

The committee sent this report to the Local Government ministry. Later on the report was submitted to the Attorney General’s office by the ministry.  

The report will be submitted on next Sunday in the two member High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md. Khairul Alam.

Earlier in an order passed by the High Court directed to examine the source of WASA water, 10 distribution zones and collecting samples of water from 10 places on random. The samples collected from 34 places were tested at the laboratories of ICDDRB, BUET and Molecular Biology department of University of Dhaka. In the test result the presence of bacteria, high level ammonia and fecal wastes were found.   

Last year on November 6 a four member committee was formed to examine the WASA water by the High Court.  The committee was formed by the representatives of Local Government ministry, BUET, ICDDRB and Dhaka University.   

The committee members are senior scientist of ICDDRB Manirul Alam, Civil Engineering department professor of BUET ABM Badruzzaman and Sabita Rezwana Rahman, chairman of Molecular Biology department of Dhaka University. On last May 21 the High Court directed this committee to test the water of WASA.
