Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have taken security measures in the capital ahead of half-day nationwide general strike protesting recent hike of gas price by Ganotantrik Bam Morcha (Left Democratic Alliance) beginning on Sunday.

Sufficient security measures have already taken in important locations in the capital to thwart any untoward incidents as BNP expressed their solidarity with the strike, according to the sources of DMP headquarters.

Law enforcing agencies kept alert to dodge any subversive activity during the strike, sources said.

Mizanur Rahman, assistant director of legal and media wing of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) told Barta24.com that adequate security measures have already taken to ensure for smooth movements of people in the city.

“RAB along with other law enforcing agencies will not allow any subversive activity in the name of the strike,” the official said.

He said: “RAB forces will also be appointed as plainclothes to maintain security in the capital.”

The left political platform, Ganotantrik Bam Morcha (Left Democratic Alliance) has called a half-day nationwide general strike in protesting the latest gas price hike on Sunday. The strike will be observed from 6am to 2pm.

The government raised the price of gas from Jul 1, in eight categories—including that of household users—despite persistent opposition from consumer rights groups.

Ganotantrik Bam Morcha took streets protesting the decision saying it irrational and demanded immediate measures to scrap it.

The fresh hike of gas price enacted from July 1.
