A ‘mentally challenged’ man hacked five people to death in Debidwar upazila of Cumilla before being killed by mob beating on Wednesday.
The man identified as Mokhlesur Rahman committed the carnage around 10:30am in the morning in Radhanagar village of the upazila.
The deceased are Anowara Begum, 40, his son Abu Hanif, 12, Nazma Akter, 36, his mother-in-law Mazeda Begum, 55, all from the Radhanagar village and wife of a certain Bajlu Mia from the Pukuria village in the upazila.
Debidwar police station officer-in-charge Zahirul Islam said the man was a drug addict. He first hacked Abu Hanif while he was working in the farm field. Later, he chopped four others one by one.
The OC also said two others were injured in the attack the mentally ailing man was later killed by the local people.
