Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said they will treat corruption as corruption hinting recent comments by ACC Chairman Iqbal Mahmood that corruption committed in good faith is not an offence as per the law.

“We will judge corruption as corruption. There’s no other way to treat it,” he said while talking to reporters at Awami League president’s Dhanmondi political office.

The Awami League general secretary said that he will have to learn what the ACC chief meant by ‘good faith’.

Talking to reporters after attending a session on the last day of the five-day Deputy Commissioners’ conference at the Cabinet Division, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman on Thursday said he had asked the DCs that the corruption committed in good faith by officers is not an offence as per the law. “But it must be proved that it was committed in good faith,” he had said.

About BNP’s allegation that the government is creating obstacles to its organisational activities, Quader said police never created any barrier to their programmes anywhere. “They got permission for holding rallies everywhere. This is an imaginary allegation,” he added.

About the role of the government and the ruling party to tackle the ongoing flood, he said party delegations went to flood-hit Jamalpur and Gaibandha on Friday and teams are also going to other affected districts.

He also said the government is sincere and taking steps to face the situation.
