Foreign Minister seeks ASEAN cooperation on Rohingya issue

Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen has sought the cooperation of the ASEAN states so that the Rohingyas can go to their homeland Myanmar safely.

On Friday (August 2) in the 26th regional forum alliance meet held in Bangkok the foreign minister made this call to the leaders of ASEAN states. The meeting chaired by Thailand was participated by the foreign ministers and high ranking leaders of 26 countries including European Union, USA, UK, Japan, China, India and others.

Abdul Momen told the forum that, ‘If the Rohingya problem lingers for long time then the security and stability of the whole region will be at stake. The role of ASEAN states including the International communities is very much important to arrange congenial atmosphere for repatriation and create habitable condition for the Rohingyas in North Rakhaine province of Myanmar, Abdul Momen said.

He further said that Bangladesh is not capable to take the responsibility of the Rohingyas for long time rather the global states have some responsibilities to solve the issue.

In the meeting the representatives of Japan, USA, Canada, Australia, South Korea, New Zealand and Malaysia called upon Myanmar to speed up in creating habitable condition in the Rakhaine province. The member states of ASEAN were also called to be included in this process of creating pressure on Myanmar.

In the meeting USA, Canada and Malaysia stressed on the trial for the cruel treatment on the Rohingyas and ensure accountability of the misdeeds of the Myanmar authority.

In the meeting foreign minister Abdul Momen drew the attention on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in South Asia, the deterioration of friendly relation in the sea boundary, human trafficking and cyber crimes. He also laid stress on the maintenance peaceful situation in the Korean peninsula for the stability of Asia and Pacific region.

Later on the foreign minister Abdul Momen had bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of Canada, India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
