As if the canon shells to kill the mosquitoes have exhausted! Going forward a step ahead, Government is mulling to destroy the carrier of dengue, Aedes mosquito by introducing radiation technology.

As pert of this experiment the scientists of the country have become busy with swamps of male Aedes. In that huge experiment Science and Technology Minister Architect Yafes Osman also showed his interests.

Saturday (03 August) such a picture was seen at the Food and Radiation Biology Institute of Nuclear Energy Research center at Savar.

A huge work rush was observed at the Savar Nuclear Energy center in the insect biotechnology department. The Scientists were busy in giving answers to the queries of the journalist on the eve of the visit of the concerned minister.

Their only reply was that they have invented an effective method to control the Aedes. After learning the method the minister expressed his ‘satisfaction’ and ordered them to transfer it in the field level. He told that all cooperation will be given from the ministry.  Yafes Osman told bartatwentyfour.com that we are working according to our capacity. The scientists are working on dengue. We hope that our role in controlling dengue will be helpful for the government.

Senior Scientific Officer Shaikh Mahfuza Momen informed that through SIT method the male Aedes mosquitoes are sterile by applying Gama rays. Those sterile male mosquitoes will mix with the dengue affected areas with the female Aedes. But because of sterile male Aedes, the breeding will not happen from the eggs or larva. So due to lack of reproductively the spread of Aedes will not happen. The Aedes reproduction will come down.

Chief Scientific officer of Food and Radiation Biology Institute Dr. Kazla Sehely informed that in controlling dengue this is very much effective method and it is internationally recognized as well.  She informed that to control dengue, the research work on Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) method has already been completed. To take this method in the field and add momentum to it, is very urgent now.

This method is very much environment friendly so it has no adverse impact on the environment. Through using this technology in the field only the sterile male Aedes will be released. As the male Aedes is incapable to carry the germs of dengue so there is no chance to spread dengue in the locality. Moreover the male Aedes does not bite human being. So the method of SIT invented by the Commission is likely to make contributions in controlling dengue.

During the visit of the minister Commission Chairman Mahbubul Haque, Member Dr. Md. Sanowar Hossain, Director General of Nuclear Energy Research center Dr. M. Azizul Haque, DG of NIB Dr. Md. Salimullah and Directors of other institutes were present.
