EC announces schedules of several pending polls

Election Commission (EC) has announced election schedules of pending eight upazilla election of the fifth upazilla polls, 14 Union Parishads (UP), and by-elections of 109 Ups.  

In a press release signed by Deputy Secretary of EC Md. Atiar Rahman on Tuesday (Sept.3) the election schedule was announced.  

According to schedule the last date of submission of nomination papers is on September 12, scrutiny of nomination papers is on September 15, withdrawal date is September 22, and casting of votes will be held on October 14.   

Md. Atiar Rahman informed that the eight upazillas are Sherpur Sadar, Mehendiganj of Barisal, Kotchandpur of Jheniedah, and in Satkania of Chattogram votes will be held through ballot casting. Besides, in Atpara of Netrokona, Sadar of Chapainawabganj, Maheshpur of Jheniedah and in Satkania of Noakhali Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) will be used.

In all the pending elections to be held on October 14 the polling will begin at 9 A.M. in the morning while it will continue till 5 P.M. in the afternoon. EC has taken all necessary measures in this direction, said this EC official.

General election to be held in pending Ups are Baghar, Gargari, Bajbagha, Pukuria, Monigram of Rajshahi; Naikhangchari, Ghumghum, Sonaichari of Bandarban; Habibullahnagar, Porjana of Shahajadpur under Sirajganj district; Ramnagar Daganbhuiyan of Feni; Mirpur of Jagannathpur under Sunamganj and Kadhurkhil of Boalkhali under Chattogram district.

EC held elections in more than 450 upazillas in five phases. Though Awami League, Jatiyo party and many other parties took part in the elections but BNP did not. The 5th Upazilla Parishad election had begun from March 10. Second phase was held on March 18, Third phase on March 24, Fourth phase on March 31 and the last phase was held on June 18. In most upazilla Awami League nominated candidates won.
