International Day of Literacy observed in Faridpur

Faridpur: The Interrnational Day of Literacy was observed here on Sunday (Sept.8) as else where around the world. The program jointly chalked out by Non- Formal Education office and District Administration included rally and discussion meeting.

A big rally was brought out in the morning from DC office premises participated by students, teachers, Ngo men and heads of various departmnets was brought out in the town that paraded the main throughfares of the town.

The rally was followed by a discussion meeting held at the conference room of Deputy Commiossioner (DC), Faridpur. DC Atul Sarkar was the chief guest in the meeting chaired by ADC (Gen) Roksana Rahman. Assistant Director of Non Formal Education Nilufar Chowdhury gave the welcome address attaching importance of the day. Professor Rezvi Zaman and Ngo personality Nazma Akhtar on multimedia presented the key-note paper on 'Literacy and Multilingualism' describing the various aspects of Literacy day. In the paper they made a number of recommendations to attain hundred percent literacy which is now 73.9 percent.

DC Atul Sarkar in his speech mentioned that a disasterous situation is now prevailing in the school level general education sector. The present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is seriously trying to get salvaged from this situation created due to the wrongful experiments of some educationists.

He urged upon all to coopearte with the governments' efforts to bring quality education and also to attain hundred percent literacy within stipulated time chalked out by the government. He also put emphasis on
learning a second language preferably English beside mother language to ensure quality education.

The meeting was also addressed by Additional Police Super Jamal Pasha, Educationist Professor Md. Shahjahan and prof. Mosharraf Ali,  principal of Rajendra college.
