From Jatiyo Sangsad Bhavan: Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that former president Husein Mohammad Ershad was a very polite gentleman.
She said that as a man Ershad was very sober, he had sympathy to other people.
On Sunday (08 Sept.) evening Prime Minister said all these in an obituary reference brought in the fourth session of 11th Jatiyo Sangsad at the death of late HM Ershad, the founder chairman of of Jatiyo Party and leader of the opposition.
Sheikh Hasina said that human being has both virtues and vices. We have many things to say against him. Because we are the worst sufferers. But for the interest of the country, for the sake of democracy and for the sake of development we have digested many unpalatable things. She prayed for the salvation of the departed soul of late Ershad.
She reminded the house that the late leader of the opposition General Ershad after he returned from Pakistan, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman allowed him to join Bangladesh Army. Gradually he became chief of Army.
The leader of the House said that the Father of Nation had laid the foundation of National Memorial at Savar. Next Ziaur Rahman came to power but though he was a freedom fighter he did not take any initiatives to preserve the memorable spots of the liberation war. But Ershad did it. Ersahd completed the unfinished work of the central Shahid Minar, completed the Savar National Memorial and built the memorial structures of Mujib Nagar.
She said that if someone does good work then we must say it. Another thing I must mention here that regarding participation in election during his presidency when we hold dialogue then we got our 14 students released who were facing death sentence awarded by Ziaur Rahman. Ershad set more people free from prison. Ersahd saved a number of families through releasing these people.
