Informative meeting on safe migration of women held in Faridpur

A day long informative meeting on ‘Social and Economic Exclusion and Migration’(SEEM) project of Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RAMRU) was held on Tuesday (Sept.17) here at the conference room of Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Faridpur.

The informative meeting was organized by local Ngo Beneficiaries Friendship Forum (BFF) while it was chaired by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Mohammad Aslam Molla.

DC of Faridpur Atul Sarkar attended the meeting as the chief guest while Director Program of RAMRU Merina Sultana and Additional Police Super Jamal Pasha were the special guests.

Executive Director of BFF ANM Fazlul Hadi Sabbir gave the address of welcome explaining the importance of this type informative meeting to create awareness among the intending migrants particularly the women so that they become careful of not being deceived.

A key –not paper was presented in the multimedia on the aims and objective of the meeting.

DC Atul Sarkar in his speech pointed out the ills of the unsafe migration. He said that the present government has drafted law in 2013 to safeguard the interests of the migrants. He stressed on skilled manpower and using a reliable broker the women migrant should go for it. He also suggested the intenders to enlist their names in the Upazilla Nirbahi Office (UNO) for enrolment. It is the duty of the UNOs to find out suitable and hassle free migration.

DC Atul Sarkar also stressed to take the help of the law enforcing agencies to take action against the fraud man power brokers in the remote villages. This will help in reducing the vulnerability rate in migratory process. Atul Sarkar also called upon all to play an active role unitedly in creating awareness among the people of this district and also to check any foul playing by the fraud brokers.  

In the meeting some enforced returnees narrated their tragic and horrifying stories of tortures both physically and mentally and losing all their properties in their own country because their masters did not pay their promised salary rather were detained illegally. They all migrated for work selling out everything in her own country.   

Speakers stressed the need for a pro-active role of our embassy men to look into the interest and welfare of our migrants. They also stressed on re-employment after they return to country empty handed.

The meeting was addressed among others by Merina Sultana of RAMRU, Additional Police Super Jamal Pasha, Panna Bala of Prothom Alo, Journalist Prof Md. Shahjahan and Ngo personnel Suresh Haldar and Asma Akhtar Mukta.
