State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell has said the ministry lacks authority to keep watch on sporting club in the country.

He stressed the need for amending the relevant laws to bring the clubs under the ministry and thus ensure accountability in their activities.

“Most of the sporting clubs are limited companies. So there is no authority of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to monitor their activities. Laws need to be amended to bring them under accountability,” he said.

The junior ministry was talking to reporters after having a review meeting with different federations on the celebration of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s birth centenary, at his Secretariat office on Tuesday (Oct 1).

“It is time to amend the laws. Sports clubs should be under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Only then accountability in their activities can be ensured,” he said.

Eighty-nine events will be arranged – 39 international and the rest national – to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu. The budget for the programme is Tk 3 billion (306 crore) which will be collected from the national exchequer and sponsors.
