Lawyers of expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, who was arrested over illegal casino operation and is serving six-month jail term for violating wildlife law, have said he needs to be taken abroad for medical treatment.

Supreme Court lawyer Afroza Shahnaz Parvin Hira made the demand after visiting Samrat, former president of the Dhaka South unit of Jubo League, the youth front of the ruling Awami League, at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in the capital on Tuesday (Oct 8).

Hira, also the legal affairs secretary of Jobo League, told reporters that Samrat’s health condition is ‘very bad’ and he is suffering from severe chest pain.

“He was supposed to go abroad on Sept 10 for a pacemaker implantation, but he couldn’t as there was a program on Sept 14 to mark the birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He needs to be taken abroad urgently,” she said.

RAB detained Samrat from Chauddagram in Cumilla in the early hours on Sunday for his alleged involvement in operation of illegal casinos in the capital.

A RAB mobile court later sentenced him to six months in jail for violating wildlife law by keeping the skins of two kangaroos in his Kakrail office that RAB recovered during a raid there.

Meanwhile, Ramna police station has pleaded to a Dhaka court to grant 20-day remand for the former Jubo League leader.’
