BUET Vice-Chancellor Saiful Islam has said the process of taking action against the students involved in the murder of Abrar Fahad was underway.

He talked to journalists at 10pm Monday after coming out of his office where he was confined for about five hours for the blockade laid by agitating students of the university.

He said, "We support the demands of the students."

Asked why he came to campus 30 hours after the incident, the Vice-Chancellor said, "I have been working all day and night. You see, so many members of a political organization have been arrested. It didn't happen without effort. The measures that have been taken up till now were all by my decisions. I have talked with the government on this. They also agree with me."

Earlier, the protesters had given the ultimatum to the VC to face them by 5pm on Monday.

Instead, the VC sat with the deans and department heads at his office.

At that time, the protesters locked the gates of the VC office around 5:30pm.

Later at 6pm the VC assured the agitating students of meeting their demands.

However, the protesters laid a blockade confining the VC at his office, alleging they didn't get any assurance of meeting their demands.

The VC came out when the protesters closed their blockade for the day to resume their program Wednesday morning.

The protesters also suggested changes may come in their demands depending on Wednesday's situation.
