The vice chancellor of BUET has said the university authorities are working to bring normalcy on the campus after the students called off their agitation demanding prompt trial in the case over the murder of their fellow student Abrar Fahad.

“We’ve accepted the demands of the students. We’ll sit with them again if necessary. We expect academic activities will be normal after the admission test [to be held on Monday],” Prof Saiful Islam said.

He was speaking at a press conference at the vice chancellor’s office on Sunday (Oct 13) noon where he sought cooperation of the students to bring normalcy on the campus.

“Banning student politics [on campus] is a sensitive issue. Still we have to accept demands of the students. We’ve dared to ban student politics in BUET as the prime minister has endorsed it,” Prof Saiful said.

The vice chancellor said the students who are sitting for the BUET admission test on Monday (Oct 14) are not being allowed to stay in the university halls for security reasons.

He said the university authorities have launched a drive to evict those staying in residential halls illegally and that the drive will continue until all illegal occupants are evicted.

Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists of BUET unit allegedly beat Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department, to death on Oct 7 over a Facebook post.

Nineteen students have been arrested in the case that Abrar’s father filed with Chowkbazar police station while the central committee of BCL expelled 11 of them.
