Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said the government is against any ban on student politics in educational institutions.

'The government is not in favour of banning student politics. It [ban on student politics] is no solution to the problem,' he said while exchanging views with journalists at Rajshahi Circuit House on Sunday (Oct 13).

Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said there is nothing wrong with student politics. “Those who are committing misdeeds in the name of student politics will be brought to book.”

His statement came after BUET authorities imposed a ban on campus politics amid the agitation of students demanding prompt trial in the case over the murder of their fellow student Abrar Fahad.

Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists of BUET unit allegedly beat Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department, to death on Oct 7 over a Facebook post.

Nineteen students have been arrested in the case that Abrar’s father filed with Chowkbazar police station while the central committee of BCL expelled 11 of them.

About the ongoing anti-corruption purge, the Awami League general secretary said the Jubo League leaders who are facing corruption allegations are ‘under watch’.

To a question, he said everyone can know later if there are allegations against Jubo League President Omar Faroque Chowdhury.

After the view-exchange meeting, Quader joined the divisional council of Awami League at Rajshahi Shilpakala Academy auditorium.
