A court in Joypurhat has awarded death penalty to seven people in a case filed over the rape and murder of a housewife in Dewra village under Akkelpur upazila of the district.
Judge ABM Mahmudul Hasan of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict on Tuesday (Oct 22). The court also fined two of the convicts Tk 500,000 each and the three others Tk 100,000 each.
The convicts are Sohel Talukder of Marma village, Afzal Hossain of Dewrapara Sonarpara village, Rahin and Azizar Rahman of Dewra Guchchha Gram, Ferdous Ali of Sakhida, Mojibur Rahman of Sonarpara and Ruhul Amin of Jagati village under Akkelpur.
According to the case statement, the accused kidnapped and raped Arati Rani, the wife of Ujjal Mahanta of Dewra village, on Oct 8, 2016. Injured critically, she died on way to hospital while her husband filed a case on Oct 10 against the seven people under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Public prosecutor Firoza Chowdhury represented the state in the hearing while five lawyers, including Mostafizur Rahman and Rafiqul Islam, stood for the accused.
