JU closed sine die, students asked to vacate halls

The authorities have closed Jahangirnagar University for indefinite period following clashes between the students agitating for the removal of vice chancellor Farzana Islam and Chhatra League activists.

An urgent meeting of the university syndicate presided over by the vice chancellor took the decision on Tuesday (Nov 5) afternoon.

The authorities also asked the students to vacate all residential halls.

“A decision has been taken for the vacation of the hall. All has to vacate halls by 4pm (on Tuesday),” said university proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan.

Sources said Pro-Vice Chancellor Amir Hossain and former Vice Chancellor Sharif Enamul Kabir opposed the hall vacation decision at the syndicate meeting.

Meanwhile, women students and those injured in the morning clash took out a protest procession on the campus against the decision to close the university.

At least 35 people, including journalists, were injured in the clash between students and Chhatra League activists.
