Jahangirnagar University Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam has termed ‘mass upsurge’ the incident of freeing her by Chhatra League activists from confinement after launching an attack on agitating students.

Students, who have been demonstrating for her removal over her alleged links with corruption involving development projects of the university, kept her confined her to her residence since Monday (Nov 4) evening.

Speaking at a press conference in the Administrative Building on Tuesday (Nov 5), she thanked ‘general student and teachers’, Chhatra League leaders and activists and teachers for freeing her.

“I wish to say thanks to my colleagues and Chhatra League activists for the mass upsurge. The Administrative Building is now open. The university will take its own course now,” the vice chancellor said.

She said, “I’ve been humiliated on a false charge. And it has been done without any proof. If there is any proof that I’m at fault, I’ll accept whatever decision is taken.”

Earlier, 35 people, including journalists, have been injured in a clash between Jahangirnagar University students, agitating for the removal of the vice chancellor, and Chhatra League activists.

Witnesses said the clash ensued when Chhatra League activists moved to the vice chancellor’s residence in a procession around 11am on Tuesday (Nov 5) and tried to drive away the agitating students from in front of the house.

Agitating students alleged that the leaders and activists of Chhatra League, the student front of the ruling Awami League, launched attack on them.

The agitators began a sit-in demonstration on Monday evening in front of the vice chancellor’s residence demanding her removal for her alleged involvement in corruption.
