There is enormous dislocation of power system due to the impact of cyclonic storm ‘bulbul’. Both the transmission and distribution poles of the electricity lines were uprooted or broken causing disruption of power in the greater Khulna region under West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCO) Ltd. About 4 lakh consumers of this zone have been facing power crisis.
It is learnt that when the storm bulbul hit in the mid night of Saturday, the power system in many areas went out. In all the nine upazillas, the system broke down. Simultaneously in Khulna city there was no power for 12 hours at a stretch.
After the repair work was done on Sunday (Nov.10) afternoon the power was restored in 40 percent areas of the city. But the electricity problem of nine upazillas is still to be solved.
Managing Director (MD) of WZPDCO comprising 22 districts of Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions MD. Shafikuddin informed that 4 lakh people of five districts have become victim of power disalocation. 15 feeders out of 32 feeders have become fit for operation now. Work on the rest feeders are going on and likely to be restored within Sunday night. This would help getting power by more than one lakh consumers.
It is to be mentioned here that 60 thousand kilometers of distribution lines have been affected by the cyclonic storm. But exact loss is yet to be ascertained. About 3500 workers of WZPDCO have been working throughout the entire affected area.
