B’baria train collision death toll rises to 16

The death toll in the collision of two trains at Kasba in Brahmanbaria has swelled to 16. Seventy-four other people were injured in the accident that took place in the early hours of Tuesday (Nov 12).

Rail communication between Dhaka and Chattogram has remained suspended after Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita and Udayan Express bound for Chattogram collided around 3am near Mondobhagh Station.

Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer Masud ul Alam confirmed the death of 16 people to Barta24.com.

Brahmanbaria fire service deputy director Tanharul Islam said, “Bodies of nine of the dead were found on the spot. Three others died at Kasba Medical Hospital, two at Brahmanbaria General Hospital and one at Cumilla Medical College Hospital.”

He said that of the 74 injured, 27 are undergoing treatment at Kasba Medical Hospital, 36 at Brahmanbaria General Hospital and 11 at Cumilla Medical College Hospital.

According to primary information, Turna Nishita collided with Udayan Express after the driver of Turna moved his train to a wrong line violating signal.

Kamalapur Railway Station manager Mohammad Aminul Haque said rail communication between Dhaka and Chattogram has remained suspended since the accident.
