25 charged in Abrar murder case

Police have pressed charges against 25 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in the case filed over the murder of Abrar Fahad, a student of the same institution.

Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monirul Islam said at a press briefing on Wednesday (Nov 13) that Detective Branch submitted the charge sheet on the day to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

He said 25 students were found involved in the sensational murder, including 19 named in the first information report (FIR).

The police officer said 11 of the accused took part in battering Abrar directly and the others were involved in the plot to beat him.

Abrar, a second year student of the electrical and electronic engineering department, was battered allegedly by leaders and activists of BUET unit of Chhatra League, student front of the ruling Awami League, on Oct 6 night over his Facebook posts.

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital pronounced him dead next day in the morning when he was taken there.

The accused who have given confessional statement to the court in the case are Nazmus Sadat, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Meftahul Islam Zion, Anik Sarker, Muzahidur Rahman, Mehedi Hassan Robin, Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir and Moniruzzaman Monir.

The other accused confessed to their involvement in the murder to police, Monirul added.

The charge sheeted accused are Mehedi Hassan Russell, Muhtasim Fuad, Anik Sarker, Mehedi Hassan Robin, Ifti Mosharraf Sakal, Moniruzzaman Monir, Meftahul Islam Zion, Amit Saha, Mazedul Islam, Muzahidur Rahman, Tabakkharul Islam Tanvir, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md Zisan, Akash Hossain, Shamim Billah, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim, Md Morshed, Moaz Abu Huraira, Muntasir Al Jemmy, Mizanur Rahman, Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Istiaq Ahmed Munna, Moshtuba Rafi  and SM Mahmud Setu.

Four of the accused – Zisan, Tanim, Morshed and Moshtuba – are on the run.
