‘Timely hospitalisation could have saved Abrar’s life’

Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Monirul Islam has said BUET student Abrar Fahad, who was beaten to death allegedly by Chhatra League activists, could have survived had he been hospitalised ‘timely’.

“BUET administration learned the incident around 2am. Had they taken Abrar to hospital immediately, he might have survived,” the police office said at a press briefing on Wednesday (Nov 13).

Monirul convened the press meet to make journalists aware of police submitting charge sheet in the Abrar Fahad murder case against 25 students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on Wednesday.

He said police rushed to the residential hall Abrar used to stay after hearing the incident around 3am but they were not allowed to enter saying that ‘there was a row, but has been solved already’.

Abrar, a second year student of the electrical and electronic engineering department, was battered allegedly by activists of BUET unit of Chhatra League, student front of the ruling Awami League, on Oct 6 night over his Facebook posts.

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital pronounced him dead next day in the morning when he was taken there.

A case of filed naming 19 students in connection with the murder, while investigators found involvement of six more in the incident.
