President, PM pay tribute to martyrs at Shikha Anirban

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have paid tribute to the members of Armed Forces martyred during the War of Liberation, by placing wreaths at Shikha Anirban in Dhaka Cantonment, marking the Armed Forces Day-2019.

The president, also the Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, placed a wreath at the altar of Shikha Anirban (Eternal Flame) at 8am and the prime minister at 8:15am on Thursday (Nov 21).

After placing the wreaths, they stood there in solemn silence for a while as a mark of respect to memories of the martyrs when bugle played the last post.

A smartly-turned-out contingent of the Army, Navy and Air Force presented a salute on the occasion.

The prime minister later joined a reception accorded to the gallantry award-winning freedom fighters and their family members at Sheikh Hasina Army Multipurpose Complex, to mark the day.

Earlier, special prayers were offered at the mosques in Army, Navy and Air Force establishments after the Fazr prayers, seeking welfare and prosperity of the country and advancement of the armed forces.

Sheikh Hasina will open the reconstructed Senakunja and attend a reception there in the afternoon.

On this day in 1971, the Bangladesh Armed Forces, comprising Army, Navy and Air Force, came into being and launched an all-out attack on the Pakistani occupation forces speeding up the victory in the Liberation War.
