Inspector General of Police Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary said members of traffic police face transfer threat from officers of different departments when they try to take action against law breach.

He talked on the matter while speaking at the inaugural session of the Traffic Awareness Fortnight at Rajarbagh Police Auditorium at Shantinagar in the capital on Thursday (Nov 21).

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the fortnight programme organised by Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Rajarbagh Police Lines. The programme will end on Dec 5.

Javed Patwary said, “There are many officers who claim themselves to be bosses of policemen and threaten them to transfer when they try to enforce law.”

“I’m assuring you that no traffic policemen will be transferred for taking legal action against law breach. But you (policemen) have to be polite to all,” he added.

The top cop said triple E – engineering, education and enforcement – is considered in traffic control while police work only for enforcement.

He said an ideal city requires roads on 25 percent of its land area, but the percentage is only 8 in Dhaka city.

Zaved said bus drivers stop their vehicles anywhere they wish though there are designated bus stoppages in the city. He urged all to comply with the traffic laws and rules.

The traffic fortnight has begun with the slogan ‘traffic discipline is the symbol of a civilised nation’ to create public awareness about traffic laws and rules.
