Fake news big enemy of mass media

The three-day 3rd National Media Conclave (NMC) has begun at Bhubaneswar, a city in eastern India state of Odisha, with the theme ‘communication in digital age’.

Indian Information Commissioner Bimal Jhumka inaugurated the media gathering at Bhubaneswar Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology on Thursday (Nov 21).

Forty-five specialists, including mass media representatives, journalism teachers and researchers, have joined the event organised by the Institute of Media Studies under Utkal University.

Ninety-eight thesis papers will be presented at the conclave that will end on Nov 23.

Five delegates from Bangladesh – led by former Chief Information Commissioner and Dhaka University mass communication and journalism teacher Dr Golam Rahman – are participating in the event.

Director of Utkal University’s Institute of Media Studies Dr Upendra Padhi presided over the inaugural session where Bimal Jhumka said massive changes are taking place in media and communication field.

He said virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are playing key role in transformation in the digital age.

The discussions of the researches in the mass media and communication at the event will focus mainly on the future of the media outlets.

Consortium for Education Communication (CEC) Director Prof Jagat Bhushan Nadda, Indian Lok Sabha member and daily Prajatantra newspaper Editor Bhartruhari Mahtab, Dr Ambedkar Foundation Director Debendra Prasad Majhi, and Utkal University Vice Chancellor Prof Soumendra Mohan Patnaik spoke as the special guests.

Adamas University Vice Chancellor Ujjwal K Chowdhury, and Tezpur University journalism and mass media department Professor Sunil Kanta Behera also spoke.

The impact of fake news was discussed at the second session where the discussants said fake news is being treated as a common enemy of the media and states.

Dr Golam Rahman of Bangladesh presided over the plenary session in the afternoon. Indian mass media specialists Dr Arul Arun, Prof Ujjwal K Chowdhury and Prof Anubhuti Yadav took part in the discussion.
