The Appellate Division has deferred hearing on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s appeal against the rejection of her bail petition by the High Court in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

The full bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Monday (Nov 25) fixed Nov 28 for hearing on the petition.

Earlier on Nov 17, Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Nuruzzaman fixed Nov 25 for hearing of the petition of Khaleda, who is serving jail term in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

Lawyers Joynul Abedin, Moudud Ahmed, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Kaiser Kamal and Meer Helal Uddin represented Khaleda Zia at Monday’s hearing while Attorney Geneal Mahbubey Alam stood for the state.

Coming out of the courtroom, lawyer Joynul Abedin said, “Khaleda Zia will get bail if justice prevails in the country. We hope she will be given bail on Thursday (Nov 28) hearing.”

The High Court on July 31 rejected Khaleda’s bail petition, prompting her lawyers to move the Appellate Division against the High Court order.

Former prime minister Khaleda and three others were jailed for seven years each in the case for misappropriation of Tk 31.54 million from Zia Charitable Trust.
