The anti-terrorism tribunal on Wednesday (Nov 27) pronounced the verdict in the case filed over the attack on the Spanish restaurant in the capital’s Gulshan on July 1, 2016, which left 20 people dead.

The victims included 17 foreigners -- nine Italians, seven Japanese and one Indian.

Al-Jazeera has covered the news item under the caption ‘Holey Artisan cafe attack: Dhaka court sentences seven to death’ which says the verdict was given amid tight security in and around the court.

BBC has run a report titled ‘Bangladesh Islamists sentenced to death for 2016 cafe attack’ which says the militants were given the capital punishment for killing 22 people.

Reuters has covered the verdict in the sensational case with the headline ‘Bangladesh sentences seven to death for 2016 cafe attack’.

The headline of the Independent UK is ‘Bangladesh sentences seven Islamists to death over 2016 terror attack on foreigners in Dhaka café’.

Judge Md Mujibur Rahman of the special tribunal pronounced the verdict in the case at 12:17pm, handing down capital punishment to the seven militants and acquitting one.

The convicts are Rajib Gandhi, Rakibul Hasan Regan, Abdus Sabur alias Sohel Mahfuz, Hadisur Rahman Sagar, Rashed Islam alias Abu Zarra alias Rash, Shariful Islam alias Khaled and Mamunur Rashid alias Ripon.

Five young attackers, armed with pistols, sub-machine guns, sharp weapons, and grenades, stormed into the cafe and started an overnight siege.

Two police officers were killed in grenade blasts as they tried to take the assailants on inside the cafe. Two employees of the eatery also died in the attack.

In an army operation codenamed ‘Thunderbolt’, Para Commandos rescued 13 hostages, killing all five attackers and a chef of the restaurant. A kitchen worker succumbed to his injuries later.
