Around 5.8 million people of the country received services from relevant agencies by calling 999, a helpline run by police, in the last two years, Inspector General of Police Javed Patwary has said.

Speaking at an event at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Memorial Park in the capital’s Gulshan on Friday (Nov 29), he said 20 million people called 999 since the service was launched in December, 2017.

Forty percent of the callers were women. We could offer service to 5.8 million of the callers. It’s a big success for the Bangladesh Police,” the top cop said.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) organised the event titled “Dhaka is for all; men-women equality can prevent violence”.

The IGP said the government is working for building a people-friendly police force. “We’re working tirelessly to make the country, nation and society safe.”

Talking of men-women equality, said the number women police members is increasing everyday and they are working with repute in Bangladesh as well as in foreign countries under UN peacekeeping missions.

Javed Patwary said both men and women have to work equally “if we want Bangladesh has to progress.”
