Two bus drivers and an aide of one of them have been awarded life-term in jail in a case filed over the death of two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantt College in a road crash last year in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrus Kayes pronounced the verdict on Sunday (Dec 1) afternoon. He acquitted two other accused.

A bus of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan crushed 11th grader Dia Khanam Mim and 12th grader Abdul Karim Rajib near Zillur Rahman flyover while competing with another bus of the same operator on July 29 last year.

The convicts are Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan drivers Masum Billah and Jubayer Sumon and ‘helper’ Kazi Asad while the acquitted are bus owner Md Zahangir Alam and another ‘helper’ Md Enayed Hossain.

‘Helper’ Kazi Asad is on the run while the two other convicts are in custody.

The court also fined the three convicts Tk 50,000 each any failure to payment of which will extend the jail term by six more months.

Dia’s father Jahangir Alam filed a case on July 29 last year over the death while Detective Branch Inspector Kazi Shariful Islam pressed charges on Sept 6 against the five and making 37 witnesses.

According to the charge sheet, Masum and Jubayer did not have licenses to drive heavy vehicles like buses; they had licenses to drive only light vehicles such as private cars, SUVs and microbuses.
