Unidentified miscreants have shot dead a local leader of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), a political organisation based in Chattogram Hill Tracts which opposed CHT Peace Accord, at Naniarchar in Rangamati.

The dead is identified as Shubo Chakma alias Giri Chakma, assistant director of UPDF. His associate Ramesh Chakma was injured in the attack carried out on Wednesday (Dec 4) morning.

Local sources said Giri (40) died on the spot while Ramesh was injured when the masked miscreants opened fire on them at their house in Egarolla Chhara area under Sabekkhang union.

Rangamati Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Meer Zahedul Haque Rony said a team of policemen has been sent to Naniarchar to recover the body. “Efforts are going to identify and arrest those involved in the murder,” he said.

Sabekkhang Union Council Chairman Supan Chakma said Egarolla Chhara area is 35 kilometres away from Naniachar police station.

A group of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) formed UPDF in 1998 opposing PCJSS signing the CHT Peace Accord with the government which ended decade-long insurgency in the hill region.
