Over a hundred pro-BNP lawyers have taken position in the Appellate Division courtroom in protest against the deferment of the hearing on a bail petition by party chairperson Khaleda Zia in a graft case.

They were shouting demanding advancement of the hearing date, leaving the courtroom in fracas and prompting the judges to leave the courtroom on Thursday (Dec 5).

Earlier, the six-member bench of the Appellate Division deferred the hearing on the bail plea to Dec 12 after the authorities sought more time to submit a report on Khalea’s health.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, also gave the authorities until Dec 11 to hand in the medical report.

The pro-BNP lawyers started shouting ‘we don’t accept the decision’, ‘shame shame’ after the court pronounced the hearing deferment order.

State counsellors also began to speak against the pro-BNP lawyers leaving the courtroom in tumult. At one stage, the judges left the courtroom without giving any written order.

Jamiruddin Sircar, Moudud Ahmed, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Mainul Hosein, AJ Mohammad Ali, Jaynul Abedin, and Mahbub Uddin Khokon were among the lawyers protesting the court decision.

Jaynul Abedin and Khandaker Mahbub Hossain stood for Khaleda Zia during the hearing while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
