Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Javed Patwary has said militants who are serving jail terms cannot be deradicalised easily and that more efforts will need to be made to bring them back to the right path.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day National Anti-extremism Conference-2019 on Tuesday (Dec 10), he said a project is required for the rehabilitation of those released after serving jail terms in militancy cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) organised the conference at International Convention City Bashdundhara in the capital.

The IGP said, “They’re our children. There should be efforts to bring them to the mainstream of the society. We’ve already asked the imams of mosques across the country to propagate messages against drugs, militancy and terrorism.”

He urged the non-government organisations to carry on campaign against the social menace.

Patwary said, “Several operations were conducted in the country after 2016. We’ve ruined militants through encounters. Now we’re enjoying the fruit.”

He said combined efforts are needed to combat the destructive menace like militancy as it is not possible for the law enforcement agencies alone to tackle it.
