The nation has celebrated the 49th Victory Day through paying rich tributes to the heroes who had sacrificed their lives in the 1971 Liberation War against Pakistan. Political parties, socio-cultural organisations and district administration across the country organised different programmes in celebration of the day on Monday (Dec 16).

Bangladesh secured victory on this day in 1971 after a nine-month bloody war in which 3 million people sacrificed their lives and around 200,000 women were raped.

Jhenaidah: The celebration of the Victory Day began in the district through 31-gun salute at the dawn. Later the district unit of the ruling Awami League hoisted the national flags at its office. District administration and freedom fighters placed wreaths at the liberation war martyrs memorial in the district town.

Patuakhali: The day was heralded with 31-gun salute in the morning. Later, political parties and socio-cultural organisations, district administration and police placed wreaths at the martyred freedom fighters memorial.

Sherpur: Jatiya Sangsad Whip Md Atiur Rahman Atiq placed a wreath at the liberation war monument in the district town in the morning. Political leaders, deputy commissioner and police superintendent followed him. Members of police, BNCC, scouts, rovers, and Red Crescent staged a parade at martyred freedom fighters memorial stadium in the district town.

Kushtia: The district administration and police placed wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of the district administration and liberation war monument on the Collectorate premises in the morning.

Later, the district administration hoisted the national flag and released pigeons around 9am at the district stadium. Special prayers were arranged seeking divine blessings of the liberation war martyrs.

Chuadanga: The celebration of the day in Chuadanga began with 31-gun salute. Later district administration, police, political and socio-cultural organisations placed wreaths at the martyred freedom fighters memorial on Hassan Square. Representatives of the district administration, members of police, Girls Guide, BNCC, Scouts and students of different educational institutions staged a parade in the old stadium.

Sylhet: A large number of people thronged the Central Shaheed Minar in Sylhet city to pay tribute to the Liberation War martyrs. Parades, processions, discussion meetings and special prayers were arranged in the upazilas under Sylhet district to mark the Victory Day.

Bhola: The Victory Day was celebrated in Bhola through paying tributes to the Liberation War martyrs. Later a rally and a parade were organised in the stadium in the district town.

Barishal: The Victory Day was celebrated in the district through different programmes. The district administration and freedom fighters placed wreaths at the martyred freedom fighters memorial in the city. Barishal City Corporation Mayor Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah placed a wreath at the memorial around 10:30am.
