Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said her party has been able to retain popularity, unlike many other parties, despite being in power for so long years.

She made the statement in her introductory speech at the second day of the two-day 21st National Council of the ruling Awami League at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday (Dec 21) morning.

The Awami League chief urged the party leaders and activists to follow the ideals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

“We’ve done a lot in the last 10 years in office when the country has progressed a lot. Now we have to strengthen the party and earn the trust of the people,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina directed the party leaders and workers to play a more responsible role rising above the personal losses and gains to fulfill the basic needs of the people.

She said, “Popularly of a party usually wanes when it is in power. But the Awami League is the only party whose popularity has increased despite being in power for long.”

Mentioning that Bangabandhu liberated the country from Pakistan to make it free from hunger and poverty and change the lot of the people, the prime minister urged the party men to work to attain the objectives.

She said the sacrifice of lakhs of people in Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971 should not be allowed to go in vain.

Meanwhile, the councilors at the mega conference entered the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh on Saturday morning to elect the central leaders of the party for the next term.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the council on Friday afternoon.
