Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the construction work of the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital to serve increasing number of passengers.
She opened the work of the Tk 213 billion (21,300 crore) project by laying its foundation stone on Saturday (Dec 28) morning.
According to Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the new terminal, which is four times larger than the existing two terminals, can serve 12 million passengers annually.
A consortium of Mitsubishi and Fujita of Japan and Samsung of Korea were awarded the work of constructing the terminal.
The government will provide Tk 50 billion of the project cost while the rest will come from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The project with an estimated cost of Tk 136 billion got go-ahead from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on October 24, 2017.
