EC to ensure level playing field in ensuing City polls

The Election Commission (EC) has sent a letter to the Home Ministry's Public Safety Department directing the preparation of the level playing field for the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election.

The directive was issued in a letter sent to Mostafa Kamal Uddin, senior secretary of the Home Ministry's Public Safety Department, signed by EC senior secretary Mohammad Alamgir on Tuesday (December 31).

According to the letter, the schedule has been announced on last December 22 for the Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation election to be held on January 30 next.  Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers have been appointed to conduct the elections. A number of decisions need to be implemented to ensure smooth and peaceful elections.

The decisions are: planning for deployment of law and order, protecting communal harmony and protection of minorities, forming an advance budget for deployment of law and order; preparation to make level playing field, to check the illegal intruders  and ensuring the overall security of the constituencies.

According to the decision taken by the Election Commission, the senior secretary of the Public Safety Department has been brought to the notice to take necessary action on the above mentioned issues.

According to the EC announced schedule, the last time for filing nomination papers is December 31, nomination papers will be scrutinized on January 2. Candidate’s withdrawal is on January 9, symbol will be allocated on January 10. The voting will be held on January 30.

Appeal to the appellate authority against the decision of the Returning Officers can be done till January 5. The Election Commission has appointed the Dhaka Divisional Commissioner as the appellate authority.
