Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Myanmar has not taken any effective steps to prevent drug trafficking into Bangladesh.

He said this while addressing as the chief guest at the 30th founding anniversary of the Directorate of Narcotics Control held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Thursday (January 2).

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said, "There is no production of drugs in our country." It is used as a smuggling route. The drug enters Bangladesh from Myanmar. Myanmar is apparently not taking any effective steps to restrict drug trafficking into Bangladesh.

He said the drug is entering the country in many ways. A part of smuggled drug is being smuggled and sent abroad. The rest amount of the drugs remains in the country. Women have been engaged in drug trafficking. Even the drug dealers are using children as peddlers so as to avoid the eyes of the security forces. These things we have noticed. Therefore, the awareness of elimination of drugs should come forward in the society.

He also said that besides establishing a government drug treatment center, I am also taking initiatives of establishing private drug treatment center. So that drug addicts get their Medicare. More than 28,000 drug addicts have been provided medical treatment from January 2019 to December through the Dhaka Central Drug Treatment Center and four divisional drug treatment centers.

Administrative approval has also been given to establish a 25-bed drug treatment center in Barisal and Sylhet. Soon the activities of the two centers will be started. License of fifty private drug treatment centers have been issued this year. At present, about 14,000 drug users have been provided Medicare through 324 private drug treatment centers.
