FMCH- Screen episode- three doctors land in jail

Three doctors of Faridpur Medical College Hospital (FMCH) have been sent to jail custody on Sunday (Jan.12) afternoon after their ad-interim 6- week bail granted by the High Court was cancelled by the District & Sessions Judge, Faridpur Begum Quamrunnahar in a corruption case filed by Anti- Corruption Commission.

The three doctors appeared in the court after expiry of the bail granted by the High Court seeking further bail. But the Court rejected their bail prayers and sent them to jail custody.

On Sunday (January 12th), District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Begum Kamrunnahar ordered their bail rejected and sent to jail.
The three doctors sent to Faridpur district jail are - Faridpur Medical College Associate Professor (Dental Department) Dr. Ganapati Biswas Shubh, former Junior Consultant (Gyenee) Dr. Meenakshi Chakma and former pathologist of the hospital Dr. AHM Nurul Islam.

It is learnt that on last November 27, Assistant Director of the ACC headquarters Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury filed a case against six persons including these three doctors for embezzling Taka 10 crore in the most widely discussed screen scam case. Later, three accused in the case received a 6-week interim bail from the High Court. At the same time, the High Court directed them to appear in the lower court. After the bail expired on Sunday (Jan.12), three doctors appeared in the Faridpur court and sought bail. The court rejected the bail and ordered them to be imprisoned.

The other three accused in the case are Munshi Sajjad Hossain, of the National Chest Disease Hospital's administrative officer who is also the owner of supplying firm ‘Anik Traders’, his brother and contractor Abdullah Al Mamun, and another brother, Messrs Ahmed Enterprises’ proprietor Munshi Farrukh.

Counsel in charge of the state prosecuting PP Advocate Dulal Chandra Sarkar said, "When the defendants appear in court and seek bail, we oppose bail for good reason." Later, the court granted our prayer and sent them to jail. ”

In the name of setting up ICU against government sanctioned Taka 10 crore, in Faridpur Medical College Hospital, the alleged accused in collusion with each other tried to misappropriate the money by purchasing useless high cost equipments and inferior quality materials without any estimate. For example one curtain for ICU was purchased at Taka 37 lakh.

Later, a case was filed under the Anti-Corruption Act of 1947 with the penal code. Kamlesh Mondal, Assistant Director of the Faridpur office of the ACC, recorded the case.

Earlier on August 20, the High Court directed the ACC to investigate the case of irregularities and corruption in the purchase of equipment and special screens at the Intensive Care Center (ICU) of Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Then, ACC Deputy Director Shamsul Alam, Deputy Director Ferdous Rahman and Shahidur Rahman, led an intensive investigations in the FMCH and found evidences of widespread corruption. Finally, the case was filed in Faridpur court on last November 27.
