‘Army will not be deployed in city elections’- EC Secretary

Army will not be deployed in the upcoming two Dhaka city corporations election, said Senior Secretary of the Commission M. Alamgir on Tuesday(Jan.21) afternoon at the EC Bhavan.  

The 58th meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda at the election Bhavan was held on Tuesday (Jan. 21) afternoon. After the meeting, EC Senior Secretary told the reporters.

Replying to a question that the army was not called at the law and order meeting, he said that it was the army's responsibility in the national election to perform duty army is not needed local government election. The army was not given any responsibility here. Those who will work in EVMs at the booths are not military forces rather technical people. Only those experts of EVM will be kept.

Asked about allegations that the executive magistrates were not visible in the field, he said, "We have spoken to the divisional commissioner several times. He said that he is trying to make all magistrates visible. But it is not always the magistrates who will inform, they have to go secretly for some time to investigate. This is why they may not be visible to everyone. But they are reporting regularly.

About the BNP's demand of voting through ballot papers he said, "I did not think such a demand was made directly. I did not receive a written demand about it . The Commission has not made any decision on ballot so far.

Among others present in the meeting chaired by CEC - Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder, Brigadier General(Rtd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, Md. Rafiqul Islam and Kabita Khanam, EC's Senior Secretary MD. Alamgir and Additional Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman.
