Mob ransacks house of JP joint secretary general in Gazipur

An angry mob has vandalized and torched the house of two death awardees convicts on charge of killing former Jatiyo Sangsad member of Gazipur-2 constituency and a popular Awami League leader Ahsan Ullah Master.

The incident took place at Gopalpur, Tongi, on Friday (Jan. 24) afternoon at the house of joint secretary-general of Jatiyo Party Nurul Islam Dipu and his brother Shahidul Islam Shipu. They are the sons of Rafiqul Islam alias Rofu Contractor in Gopalpur area of Tongi. Shipu is currently in jail. And Dipu is in abroad. Although they do not live here, their relatives and tenants live in their home.

Atiqur Rahman, senior station officer of Tongi Fire Station, said one unit of the first floor of the house was gutted. Other units, including the lower floor, were vandalized. Due to the quick action of the Fire Service, the fire could not spread to other units.

Dipu's wife, Sharifa Khanam Sumi, said that after the Asr prayers, about 500 people with a procession suddenly attacked the house with a stick. They entered the house and vandalized the house and furniture before they could understand anything.

She also said that when the attackers were obstructed, they said that no relatives of the Master's murderer would be allowed to stay in Tongi. There will be no sign of their home. They threatened to set our house on fire. The fire burnt three rooms of the house. Furniture of at least 20 rooms were vandalized. Later, two vehicles of the Tongi Fire Service and the police brought the under fire control. After the police reached to the scene, the situation was calm.

Tongi Thana Awami League and its affiliated organizations have been protesting for the past few days as Dipu, sentenced to death for the murder of Ahsan Ullah Master was made joint secretary general of JP recently.

Ahsan Ullah Master was shot dead on May 7 of 2004 at a rally at Noagaon MA Majid High School ground next to his house. His younger brother, Awami League leader Matiur Rahman, filed a case in Tongi Police Station against 30 including general secretary of Jatiyo Chattra Samaj Nurul Islam Dipu as the main accused.
